Port Moody is on the verge of a groundbreaking shift in childcare accessibility with the introduction of a first-of-its-kind modular childcare center. Acorn Management, in collaboration with SwissReal as the developer and Aultrust’s vision for community-driven investment, has secured full city approval and building permits to bring a scalable, repeatable solution to the growing childcare crisis.
A Model for Future Expansion
With a fully approved Temporary Use Permit (TUP), this project is setting a precedent for how fast, high-quality childcare solutions can be deployed efficiently. Unlike traditional centers that take years to develop, this purpose-built modular facility will be delivered and installed in phases, starting March 1st, with full functionality expected by April.
This childcare center will add 36 much-needed spaces in downtown Port Moody a significant step toward addressing the ongoing shortage, as highlighted in a recent TriCity News article. However, the demand remains overwhelming—within days of installing a site sign in late January, over 200 families joined the waitlist.
Designed for the Future of Education
This isn’t just a daycare—it’s a center designed with purpose, incorporating the Reggio Emilia philosophy with:
- Large, flexible classrooms that allow for long-term projects, provocation tables, and creativity-driven learning.
- A dedicated nap room with fresh air circulation and blackout shades for optimal rest.
- Natural light-maximizing design with adjustable LED lighting for a calming environment.
- A staff-centered approach, including a dedicated staff room for collaboration, a fully equipped kitchen for food prep, and an open-concept entrance that fosters parent engagement.
- A thoughtfully designed playground, facing a back alley and preserving a historical heritage tree, in alignment with Acorn’s vision and city planning efforts.
The project’s strategic location on Hugh Street ensures easy drop-off and pick-up, with additional private parking and waste management at the rear, creating a safe and efficient flow for families.
A Collaborative Effort with Visionary Leadership
This childcare initiative wouldn’t be possible without the backing of Aultrust and SwissReal, who are making this a repeatable solution for future locations. Additionally, local champion Fred Soofi has provided a 15-year land lease at a favorable rate, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this project.
As Acorn continues to expand, its mission remains clear: to provide high-quality childcare through a scalable model that meets the needs of families today and in the future.
